This show by six artists examines relationships among bodiless virtual characters and human beings with physical forms. Japan is known around the world for developing virtual characters and might be considered an “Empire of Signs,” in the words of philosopher Roland Barthes. This raises complex issues about the nature of the self, body, and soul, and whether a character can ever “die,” or if their souls can be interchanged. They seem to be on a different trajectory than human beings, but how are they influencing us? These works consider these questions.
