Mitsuko Akutsu and Cho Kyong Hee 2019
This event has ended.
This exhibition presents Mitsuko Akutsu’s Jacquard weavings and Cho Kyong Hee’s white relief works and prints. Akutsu has been researching and working at the Montréal Centre For Contemporary Textiles since 1999. Here she presents Jacquard weavings developed from images of bark that deal with themes of existence, traces, and time. In small works, she carves into bark and hand embroiders these marks with thread and needle, bringing them to the surface.
Since 2006, Kyong Hee has been working on the ‘White Tones Series’ of reliefs that give shape to subtle shadows and prints that create images of light through gradations in shade. Now for the first time in six years, Kyong Hee uses plaster in the reliefs that create architectural effects with the material. The graphic expressions of Akuzu’s thread and Kyong Hee’s ways of capturing light reverberate across the artists’ different genres in the second exhibition of their work since 2016.
