Interested in themes of life, death, and decay, Taisho Morita has used animal bones and insect shells in his sculptures since 2006. To Morita, the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake was a reminder of humanity’s fear and awe for nature and made him conscious of the loss of life animals as well as humans. The experience lead him to sense new possibilities for the future and search for new expressions based on views of life and death. His new ‘Extinct Animals’ series creates sculptures of animals, wood, and metals from the forest. New works including large pieces are exhibited.
