This event has ended.

*Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura Annex is temporarily closed from Mar. 4 to Mar. 22.

This is the first retrospective in twenty years of the work of Sekine Shoji (1899-1919), who lived through much of the turbulent period that was the Taisho era, before passing away at the age of just twenty. Having taught himself to paint, Sekine became intoxicated by the culture of decadence before the influence of Northern Renaissance painting saw his own unique sense of coloration come into flower. His dreamlike paintings have a timeless quality to them. This exhibition showcases rare oil paintings by the artist, as well as sketches and hitherto unseen letters.
