Seiju Omoda
Seiji Omoda (1891-1933), a Japanese-style painter of which Kawagoe is proud, was one of those who were active at the forefront of Japanese-style painting during the Taisho and Showa periods when Japanese-style painting was acquiring a new form of expression. Born in the center of Kawagoe, now known as the "City of Storehouses,” Omoda moved to Tokyo at the age of 17 and spent his youth exploring the future of Japanese painting with like-minded friends such as Shiho Imamura and Goshu Hayami. Later, through his participation in the revived Japan Art Institute Exhibition, he awakened to a firm expression as a painter, but just as he was expected to be more active, his health failed and he died at the young age of 41.

Although Omoda's painting career was not smooth, his fusion of realism and decorativeness based on his observation of nature and his intense use of color, which he achieved after many setbacks, is still highly regarded today as his one and only individuality.

This exhibition traces the development of his painting career through representative works from each period, and also examines his relationship with Kawagoe and the actual production of his works, mainly during the Showa period. This is the first Omoda exhibition at the museum in 19 years, since the first anniversary of its opening.
