Artists

Kinuko Emi
Kinuko Emi (1923-2015) gained attention as one of the shining stars in the 1960s when abstract painting flourished, actively participating in the activities of the Action Art Association. In 1962, she became the first Japanese woman to exhibit at the 31st Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. Continuing to uphold abstract expression, she dedicated herself to promoting local art as the president of the Kanagawa Women Artists Association.

While this exhibition is a modest project consisting of nine paintings, it reflects on Emi's artistic career from 1950 to her later years with "life" as a keyword. The paintings depict various aspects of "life," including the birth and separation of familiar lives, significant losses due to natural disasters, the concept of "life" instilled in society during the post-war period of rapid economic growth, and the regeneration of "life" within the artworks themselves.
