Tsuguharu Fujita
The year 2023 marks the 110th anniversary of Foujita's first visit to Paris. After graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (now Tokyo University of the Arts), Fujita was disappointed when his works were not selected for the Bunten Exhibition three years in a row, but with the encouragement of his father, he made the long-awaited trip to Paris in 1913. From the beginning of his studies in Paris, Fujita was aware of the world and aimed to become a painter who painted "not just imitations of others," but paintings that were "unique to each individual." His first solo exhibition at the Galerie Chéron in Paris in June 1917 was well received, and in November 1919 he was awarded a prize at the Salon d'Automne for two oil paintings. His three works exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in November 1921, including a nude, were praised as "grand found blanc," and he became the darling of the Paris art world.

This exhibition focuses on Fujita's early works, from the rare works before his study in Paris, which are on view for the first time, to the "milky white canvas," which is synonymous with Fujita, and traces the transition in the development of his painting style.
