Artists

Shouji Ueda, Teiko Shiotani
Born in the Sanin region, spending their entire lives there, and continuing to capture photographs in the Sanin region, photographers Shouji Ueda (1913-2000) and Teiko Shiota (1899-1988) gained international acclaim. This year marks the 110th anniversary of Shoji Ueda's birth.

In the early days of Ueda's photography career, Teiko Shiota, who achieved remarkable success by winning first place in the monthly photo magazine competition, was like a godly figure to the young Ueda. The works of these two artists, who deeply loved the Sanin region, featuring seascapes, villages, the genuine smiles of people, and children, resonate deeply in the hearts of viewers.

The two featured works depict the daughters of Ueda and Shiota, respectively. Shiota, representing Japanese art photography, and Ueda, representing Modernism, portray their intimate subjects with affection. This exhibition showcases around 100 works, including those that capture the essence of the Izumo mythology along with the masterpieces of these two giants in the world of photography.
