120 Years After His Birth, 60 Years After His Death: Yasujiro Ozu's Aesthetic Eye - Ozu Art

Chigasaki City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Yasujiro Ozu
Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963), one of Japan's most famous film directors, was closely associated with Chigasaki. It was also a filming location for some of his movies. His best-known films, "Late Spring,” “Early Summer," and "Tokyo Story," were all shot at the Chigasaki Kaikan, where Ozu stayed regularly, and he is also known for co-writing the screenplays with screenwriter Takao Noda (1893-1968).

This exhibition focuses on Ozu's aesthetic sense as glimpsed through his films and personal life, through materials and props related to his films, his old collection, and his writings. In addition to his meticulous attention to set layout and composition, the shapes of props, and the colors used in his color films, Ozu also took up the brush himself and left behind paintings filled with a playful spirit. This exhibition will explore Ozu's high sense of aesthetics and what he was trying to convey through his films.
