130 Years After His Death: Mokuami Kawatake - From Edo to Tokyo

Waseda University Theatre Museum
Finished
Kabuki playwright Mokuami Kawatake (1816-1893) was active in the Kabuki theater world from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period with the motto of "three kinds of kindness: kindness to the audience, kindness to the actors, and kindness to the showman." True to his motto, Mokuami continued to write plays that brought out the best in the actors, delighted the audience, and attracted a large number of customers.

Moreover, Kawasaki was active during a period of great social change from Edo to Tokyo. Shoyo Tsubouchi described Kawatake as "the great questioner of Edo theater" and "the Shakespeare of our time" for his ability to capture the changing world and express it with his brush, while at the same time maintaining tradition.

This year, 130 years after his death, the Mokuami Theatre Museum will hold its first major exhibition of Kawatake's works in 30 years, in collaboration with the National Theatre of Japan.
