Naoya Hirata explores our physicality and identity at a time when the march of digital technology is driving a growing virtualization of the body itself, and avatars become increasingly common. Those used on VR social media platforms are not simply stand-ins, but mirrors that reflect deliberately chosen individual characteristics and ideas; manifestations of our true psyche. In a future of sophisticated AI with recognizable personalities, will even be able to distinguish between human being and the AI we have created? In this exhibition Hirata attempts to explore “the locus of the spirit residing in the surface that is the body.”
