Uemura Shouen, Shoukou and Atsushi: from the Collection of the Shouhaku Art Museum

Uemura Shouen, Uemura Shoukou, Uemura Atsushi
In the history of modern Nihon-ga (Japanese style painting), Uemura Shouen stands as a painter who brought the Edo Period art of Ukiyo-e painting into the modern era and established a unique style of expressing the female ideal. Following in his mother Shouen's footsteps, Uemura Shoukou established his own unique style in the genre of flower and bird painting. Then his son, Uemura Atsushi, went on to establish an art of his own that built on traditional Japanese painting with a combination of keen observation and contemporary sensibilities. The devotion of these three generations of painters to the true path of Nihon-ga in a time when so many are lost in their artistic quests, stands out like a single stalwart path leading us to examine the very essence of Japanese painting. This exhibition brings together approximately a dozen masterworks by the Uemuras from the collection of the Shouhaku Art Museum, carefully selected with the kind cooperation of the museum.
