Once upon a time, portrait photography could mean two things: pictures of famous artists and actresses, with abnormally large auras and sensitive streaks, or the almost ceremonial shots at weddings and other junctures in life. But since the digital revolution brought about a true turmoil in the photography world, the genre, too, has been thoroughly redefined. People snapshot their way through life and their personal relationships, in a very casual manner. Portrait photography has become a real-time epitome of everyday social life.
This exhibition presents over 70 refreshing portraits of contemporary individuals, families, and places taken by 6 young Japanese photographers. Variety is the keyword: teenagers, newborn babies, elderly people,...of various professions, and in various situations; these 6 photographers also have their very own way of approaching their subjects.
Contemporary portrait photography is as diversified as the society it evolves in.
