Morio Nishimura and Yoko Matsumoto Exhibition

Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura
Finished

Artists

Morio Nishimura, Yoko Matsumoto
This is the tenth exhibition of the series "Today's Artists", a combination of two solo shows which started in 1988 at The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura.
Nishimura Morio (1960- ) has decided to reside and work in Germany after completing his study at the Duesseldorf art academy in 1992.
His creation circles around the motif of the lotus plant. The energy and the sense of time the lotus represents are transformed into subtle but dynamic works which envelop the Buddhist connotation of the plant.
This will be his first large exhibition organised in Japan. 20 of his works will be displayed ranging from wood and glass sculptures to paper objects all using the lotus motif.
Ever since Matsumoto Yoko (1936- ) debuted her career in the early 1960s, she has courageously and obstinately explored the possibility of abstract painting.
The vast layered surface of purple and pink colours invites us to a world of light and dissolution. Liberating itself from matter, the colours in their essential form create a transparent and expansive sensation. Matsumoto's paintings although abstract, evoke familiar things like air, water, wind and trees. They are maternal, enveloping light and darkness, real and unreal, reflecting and absorbing light.
35 of her works since the early 1990s to the latest painting entitled "the green painting(tableau)" will be on display.
This exhibition will hopefully reveal a dialogue between works of two contrasting artists.
