Fuyuko Matsui
When the cherry blossoms start to bloom at Kudan, Gallery Naruyama is going to introduce frightful Japanese paintings drawn by a Japanese beauty, Fuyuko Matsui.
"I can feel with the ghosts because the motive power of their appearance is anger", Matsui says. She expresses the state of being almost insane on silk, intertwining the hysteric into the classic Japanese elegance.
The picture scroll of "Kusou-shi" of the Kamakura period is said to be impure. Inspired by this ancient Japanese painting, Matsui expresses the state of "keeping up the pureness" in drawing pure corpse. She feels the said state as something which touches the nerves of pain.
In ancient Japan, paintings of ghosts and cruel motives were used to drive away the evil or as a bringer of good luck. The idea of "controlling the evil spirit with an evil spirit" made people to decorate their house with those paintings. Connoisseurs had them even on the inside of their kimonos.
There is no thing like the undefinable object of Japanese ghosts which stands more for Japanese emotion and the sense of beauty.
