Mario Díaz
Born in 1950, Mario Díaz is a leading photographer in Cuba. Aside from being a photographer, he is also a key figure in the Cuban photography world. He was the head of the Cuban National Photography Center "Fototeca de Cuba" from 1994 to 2000. It is not surprising for such a nationally honoured person to dedicate most of his work to his country, and its global image. Díaz has been shooting pictures of daily life in Cuba and its poverty since the 1970s. The light Latin touch with which he endows his photos is rooted in patriotic love for his motherland. Yet, to denounce his pictures as communist propaganda would be a denial of Díaz' great talent. Loving your country doesn't mean you can't present a straightforward portrait of it, because Díaz does both.
