Baikoan Collection "Modern Pictures of Beautiful Women - Aestheticism and Melancholy"

Urawa Art Museum
Finished
"Female Beauty" whether in the east or west, in the past or present, has been an eternal theme in art. The Edo Period in particular was a time when, along with ukiyo-e prints, paintings of beautiful women were at their most popular. Since the Meiji Period too, many works have continued to be produced, as they retain a deeply-rooted popularity.
There are few opportunities to see such paintings of beautiful people, and it is not easy to learn the whole story associated to this movement. There are even fewer occasions to discover these works that lie in the collections of enthusiatic art collectors.
This collection exhibition is special in that it portrays the aestheticism and melancholy of the decadence of Japanese Nihonga painting from the 1910s to the 1930s.
