Zuijin Scrolls - The Art of Men

Okura Shukokan Museum of Fine Arts
Finished

Artists

Hoitsu Sakai, Seison Maeda
A "zuijin" (attendant) refers to the person who accompanies members of the Imperial Family as a bodyguard when they go out. They are known for their incredibly refined good looks. The zuijin scrolls which the Okura Shukokan Museum is putting on display were made at the end of the Heian period (1247) and feature 9 zuijin. They are representative works of the "likeness paintings" which aimed to depict things realistically, and are considered national treasures. This exhibition focusses on works by Houitsu Sakai and Seison Maeda.
