Jenny Holzer
Jennifer Holzer was born in Ohio in 1950, and currently lives in NY. Since the 70s, she has created art in various media that feature text, the most famous being her LED works. In 1990, she received the Golden Lion award at the Venezia Biennale, securing her status as an internationally acclaimed artist. Also popular in Japan, her first ever private exhibition in Japan was held at the Mito Art Tower in 1994.
This exhibition features Holzer's most reknown LED installations, as well as some black and white photographs. The installation consists of 84 minature LED signs, all showing identical text, placed minimally in the room. The text undulate as if resonating within the darkness, making the installation both conceptually and visually impactful.
The photographs document the ongoing "Xenon" project that has been held at historically significant public sites around the world since 1996. The "Xenon" project is a performance event which involves moving words and images being projected onto buildings and even the ocean, subsequently temporarily changing the nature and meaning of the place itself. Holzer's photographs not only serve to document the project, but are in themselves highly sophisticated artworks.
