"Box Art" Exhibition

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Tanks, airplanes, boats and robots... From the beginning of 1955, model toys became very popular in Japan, and have developed considerably until the present day.

Box art is the "face” of plastic model kit boxes, made with the aim of alluring consumers into buying them. Looked at as paintings, these boxes reflect the sudden surge of imagery in the post-war period and are a useful insight into post war Japanese society. This exhibition presents 160 key works of box art from the war years and the post war years.
