Yozo Hamaguchi + Minami Keiko "The World of Butterflies"

Musee Hamaguchi Yozo / Yamasa Collection
Finished

Artists

Yozo Hamaguchi, Keiko Minami
This exhibit will feature 20 works by print artists Yozo Hamaguchi (1909-2000) and Keiko Minami (1911-2004), Hamaguchi’s wife. Hamaguchi's works which are like smooth velvet, were created by adding color to the Mezzotint technique that was invented in Europe in the mid-17th century. On the other hand, Minami's poetic works were created by "etching" in which the image is drawn with a sharp needle-like tool on the treated copperplate surface to allow corrosion. The two artists' butterflies are creating using completely different technique and expressive styles. Production secrets, magazine cutouts left in the couple's house, animal and plant encyclopedias, photographs that the artists took and sketches from Hamaguchi's childhood will be explored.

At the same time, a photography collection by Norihisa Hashimoto + scope who have been scanning actual butterflies and enlarging them in their works and the actual butterflies will be on display. Works include "Ladybug," "Seashell," "Cherry," and "Bird" that are fitting for the season.
