Álvaro Siza
Álvaro Siza is an architect based in Porto, Portugal, who has been active for more than half a century. His spaces, which transcend the context of modernism and give a feeling of universal beauty and tranquillity, have been highly appraised, and Siza has received numerous awards in various countries. His design activities, which began in the 1950s in his birthplace of Matosinhos, have now spread throughout the world, including such countries as Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil and South Korea.

Architecture always stands in the midst of differing conditions. Siza says that in making designs one of the important stances is to be able to respond sensitively to changes in conditions. The exhibition will feature seven of his representative works such as “Santa Maria Church” (1990-2006), “Lisbon Expo Portugal Pavilion” (1995-98) and his latest large-scale work “Teatro de Campo Alegre” (1998-). Each has differing “context” and “nature of work” and these works will portray Siza’s approach to design and introduce the poetic quality of his spaces. At the venue, tables and exhibition panels are carefully placed according to Siza’s elaborate planning and a large number of sketches, models and plans will be used to introduce the works. An installation composed of multiple construction materials (wood, stone, steel, plywood, blocks) will also be displayed in the courtyard, and there will also be a film with an interview, showing his early works in Spain and Portugal.
