Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert "Satra: The Gypsies of Sintesti"

Konica Minolta Plaza
Finished

Artists

Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert
From 1990 to 1997, Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert photographed a gypsy camp near Sintesti, a half hour drive from Bucharest, Romania. The camp houses about 1000 gypsies who make their living through ironmongery, having forgone the nomadic lifestyle of their ancestors.

Later works from 16 years of recording the changes of this camp will be on display for this exhibition. Much has changed in the lives of the gypsies since the fall of communism in 1989, and the works capture the shifting of traditions and cultures, the influences of the Western world, and the rise of living standards following the success of the scrap metal business.
