"Playing with Cloth the Japanese Way - The World of Crepe Crafts"

Tobacco & Salt Museum
Finished
The practice of adding fine wrinkles to silk textiles, or 'chirimen', became widespread in Japan at the end of the 17th century. Left over or recycled cloth was often used to decorate small toys and utility goods.

It was an art that was taught at girls' schools in the Meiji Era, but was forgotten with the spread of Western clothes and the onset of war. With the recent activities of the Japan Toy Museum however, chirimen decoration is once again regaining popularity.

Japan Toy Museum and Tobacco & Salt Museum collaborated for this exhibition to display antique works decorated with chirimen from their respective collections, to introduce the depth and history of this art.
