Shoko Kawasaki + Kaii Higashiyama Exhibition

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Shoko Kawasaki, Kaii Higashiyama et al.
Shoko Kawasaki (1886-1977) developed his original ink drawing style after learning from his father Senko Kawasaki and studying at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. In the Taisho period, he created fresh and romantic works applying contemporary concepts to traditional Yamato-e. He also became interested in oil painting and theater arts and did various experiments. During and after the wartime, he spent time in Ochiai Village in Yamanashi, where he repeatedly drew the landscapes, flowers, fruits, and animals of the area. After that, he actively exhibited his calm and poetic paintings.

Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999) also studied painting at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. While Kawasaki was a professor at the university, Higashiyama was studying in Germany as an exchange student. After his return, Kawasaki joined huge exhibitions in which Kawasaki was also showing. He married one of Kawasaki's daughters, Sumi, and spent some months with the Kawasaki family in Yamanashi. When he was drafted to a military camp in Kumamoto prefecture, he was inspired by the beautiful scenery of Aso Mountain and decided to become a landscape painter. Since then, he worked on landscapes all over Japan, Germany and Austria, and was also commissioned to create murals for temples.

Higashiyama didn't receive lessons directly from Kawasaki, but they respected each other on a personal level and also as artists. They both lived till the age of 90, producing numerous masterpieces. This exhibition includes works by those two artists, and also Shoko's father Senko, and his children, Suzuhiko, Haruhiko and Haruhiko's child Mako - total approximately 70 works are on display.
