Shobey Shiino et al.
Opening of the Yokohama port was a critical break for Japan. A big horizon suddenly opened up to the nation which was freed from a long period of isolation. Shobey Shiino was the figure who understood the meaning of this major change more than anyone and continued to be at the forefront of his time. Born in Odawara in 1839, Shiino started silk textile business in Yokohama with Hachibei Kata, Edo Shogunate's contract dealer in kimono fabrics, in the year of the opening of the port. Hanging the sign "S. Shobey Silk Store" and putting up an ad written in English, Shiino became a representative businessman of Yokohama, expanding his silk business worldwide with his international flair.

Available for purchase and on view in this event, held at the site where Shiino operated his business, are silk items from S. Shobey, Kyoko Sugano-produced Yokohama ceramics, Yokohama maps from the Meiji period by Kazumitsu Tanabe and more.
