Yoichiro Nishimura
This exhibition at Roonee 247 Photo Gallery features the work of photographer Yoichiro Nishimura. Since the gallery opened, this marks Nishimura's fifth exhibition in 3 years. Featured are a series of photos developed by arbitrarily combining negatives of shots taken of likenesses of human faces cast in plaster, and negatives of shots of irregular patterns drawn in ink that was dropped onto the surface of water.
Through the synthesis of these irregular motifs traced in ink, as well as the uneven bumps and depressions on the surface of the plaster objects, Nishimura evokes the undulations and irregularities of human expression. This experiment in the layering of freeform icons on white textures is not Nishimura's first foray into the technique. His 2002 work entitled "Incarnation" was an attempt at combining negatives of water photograms with photos of dancing butoh artists. Of the work at the time Nishimura stated that he attempted to "render visible through the technique of mutual overlap, the space and time of an object in terms of the life it possessed, something that was otherwise invisible". This series of work is based on the same idea invoked in "Incarnation". Nishimura's work is extremely abstract, being based on fundamental material qualities such as the printing paper and silver salts he uses. This sort of pursuit seems to go against the flow of recent photography and art, which privileges clearly defined motifs, but it is precisely for this reason that the unique sensibility in this work becomes all the more conspicuous.

Around 30 monochrome works are on display.
