Nobuhiko Nukata
Nobuhiko Nukata was born in Osaka in 1963. After graduating from the graduate school at the University of the Arts in Aichi Prefecture in 1991, he received sponsorship to go to live in London starting in 1999. That year, Nukata exhibited at the large scale "Painting for Joy" exhibition organized by the Japan Foundation that traveled around cities in America and Europe introducing the work of young Japanese artists. His simple, stoic works were much lauded. Following this exhibition, Nukata continued exhibiting both in Japan and abroad, winning much acclaim for his work. One of his representative works, the Jungle Gym series, features monochrome lines on an evenly-painted foundation coat that has the appearance of computer graphics, but in fact consists of layered, sinuous grid patterns drawn freehand on the surface of the painting without any use of masking tape or other aids.

Nukata's work in recent years uses a mixed technique of oil pigments and egg tempera on linen, on which he draws a pattern adhering to the weave of the cloth. One of the artistic precepts prized by Nukata is the freehand drawing of lines, which according to him represents "a system for painting; the more rules are established, the more freedom is achieved; the more objective the interpretation of the subject, the more restrictions are imposed on the painting, the more free the work becomes". His last solo exhibition held two and a half years ago impressed with the vivid colors and the liberal use of pigment. This show features his predominantly white "Strings" series with an established set of rules for his painting, and that sense of freedom that arises paradoxically from the self-imposed spell of that system.
