Deanna Thompson
The Display Art Project is a new exhibition series kicking off this autumn. The first installment features the work of Deanna Thompson, an artist who lives and works in America, making works that continue to startle and shock even the most seasoned curators.
Thompson was born in California in 1958. After obtaining a BA at California State University in 1980, she moved to live in suburban Los Angeles, and is now based out of a village in Joshua Tree National Park, immersing herself in her work, hardly leaving California, or even the desert region where she now makes her home. Thompson's work depicts scenes from everyday life and desert landscapes, finished with a tender, somewhat orthodox touch with oil paint. Her motifs include sofas, water flasks, buckets and all manner of other objects, all of which become personifications of the unique, parched cast of Middle America in Thompson's hands, transforming into a sort of strange fetishism for these emblems, just as with David Hockney's swimming pools. Her images also sometimes recall the CD jacket designs of alternative musicians, and the interiors she depicts are also art in themselves.

With the support and recommendation of curator Jerry Sohn, Display Gallery is pleased to bring you this exhibition of about 10 of Thompson's large-scale (size B6) oil paintings as part of the Display Art Project. This is an ideal opportunity to encounter Thompson's exquisite portrayals of locality and Americana.
