Hiroshi Oshima + Katsuhide Arai "Re-presentation"

Photographers' Gallery
Finished

Artists

Hiroshi Oshima, Katsuhide Arai
Photographer Hiroshi Oshima started his career with two exhibitions: "Hikari" (1967, Kinokuniya Gallery) and "Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre" (1968, Ginza Gallery). In the 1970s, he created the term 'on the spot photo exhibition' when holding the exhibitions "Sanhei" and "Taira Island Hamlet Map", whose photographs were exhibited at the sites where they were shot. In the 1980s, Oshima launched the photo theory magazine "Photo Apparatus". As editor of the magazine, he devoted himself to the search for ever more daring possibilities of photographic expression. Since the 1990s, Oshima has been taking photos on the theme of "sand".
This time, Oshima will recreate the "Hikari" and "Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre" exhibitions that he originally realized with his peer at the time, Katsuhide Arai. While the former consists of identical photos capturing the head of the Hikari bullet train lined up on the wall of the gallery, the latter has the display wall first copied, enlarged to the same size as the actual wall, and then pasted onto it. According to Oshima, these were an "exhibition of presence" and an "exhibition of action", Oshima was among the first to focus his attention on the quality photographic immediacy, of having the subject immediately before one's eyes - a photography that resists and evades linguistic context. Oshima thereby continues to pose basic questions surrounding photography, questions that require reexamination in an age when countless photographs are taken, consumed and then thrown away.
