Kiyoshi Kawashima
Kawashima was born in 1951. In 1983 he dropped out of the doctoral program in sculpture at the art research department of the Tokyo University of the Arts. From 1986 to 1988, he lived in America with the support of the Asian Cultural Council, participating in P.S. 1 Project in New York. He showed work at "Japan in the 1990s-Proposals by 13 Artists" held at the Museum of Folklore in Rome and the Dusseldorf Art Museum. In 2000, he exhibited at the "Art Today 2000" exhibition held at the Saison Contemporary Art Museum. Currently continues to exhibit mostly at solo exhibitions. Showed at Iwaki Art Museum in 2006 and the Kumamoto Contemporary Art Museum in 2007, the only sculptor representing Japan.

Kawashima's recent work investigates the elementary qualities of his materials. Through differences in the strengths of materials of the surfaces of his works, he creates sculptural spaces. The quality of these works is oriented towards the origins of these materials and substances. Well aware of the limitations of sculpture, Kawashima has a stronger relationship to those boundaries. This exhibition features new works in steel, lead and wood.
