Artists

Anne Lydiat, Jomi Kim, Keiko Kamma
A piece of clothing on a hanger redolent of its owner, or the recollection of what it feels like to sit on a swing when you see it blown about in the wind: these are signs of absence, means by which we are able to reassess what it means exactly to experience and perceive events and situations. After the tumult of the art bubble has petered out, the practice of artists who are turning more towards introspective means of expression is once again attracting attention.

This exhibition features the work of 3 female artists situated in a realm that hangs midway between absence and presence, quietly drawing on its subtle impulses and channeling them into their work.

London-based Anne Lydiat, who exhibits widely in Europe, will show "Moon and Moth" (2008), a work which was created during an art project held at Kodaiji in Kyoto. The work consisted of female moths inserted like biological specimens into a glass jar, and was exhibited on the grounds of the temple under the light of the moon, causing male moths to be attracted to the work. The piece created a fantastical landscape in which death and life intersected with each other in the middle of a quiet, still setting.

Jomi Kim, who is currently based in Kansai, works with everyday materials like rubber bands, adhesive tape and hair to create installations. Kim's work consists of casual assemblages of objects that transform the atmosphere of the space in which they are installed, provoking quiet, destabilizing "landslides" within the viewer.

Keiko Kamma, who is also the organizer of this exhibition, will show a sound installation that creates illusionistic impressions, "causing memories of all events that have unfolded in space-time to float in the exhibition space."
