Artists

Asagi Natsume
This is the second solo exhibition by Asagi Natsume at Gallery Tsubaki.

For the first exhibition, Natsume depicted figures without any facial features, standing or sitting, using a rich and heavy palette. This time, she selected lighter colors and dealt with "eating" motions, while the sense of emptiness drifting in her pictorial world is emphasized more than ever before.

"While people often describe my work as fragments of a story, there is actually no narrative in it," says Natsume. "At a time when depicting facial features was a troublesome process for me, I chanced upon a person sitting on a bench who looked as if his (her) soul was gone. That was the moment when I realized that there's no need to paint such details. Even if you try to copy each part and characteristic of your sitter, you can't articulate who that person really is. So I just capture the feel of what I see and visualize it on a canvas."

A total of 11 new paintings on display present to viewers "signs of presence" that exude from Natsume's layers of paint.
