Yuko Murata
Since her first solo exhibition in 2000, Murata has exhibited her paintings widely both in Japan and abroad. These works are based on images taken from tourist photographs, atlases, picture postcards and magazines, depicted in forceful yet simple linework.

The refined stillness and quietude of her minimal picture surfaces, purged of ornamentation, reflect the unique Japanese aesthetic of "wabi-sabi" of humbleness and unassumingness. Murata's distinctive character comes from her acute sense for color and a contemporary sensibility that infuses the images she uses that have been lifted from various forms of media circulating around her. These plants and animals, standing in a sort of quiet, unreachable space, wear contradictory expressions that seem to prefigure a future omen. They also have a kind of lofty demeanor that denies entry from the outside world.

This exhibition features works with a whiff of spring about them: grasses, cacti, flowers and animals.
