Antenna
Antenna is a group of young Japanese artists who are based in Kyoto. Each of the group's members has their own special domain such as video, sculpture, illustration, architecture, and design. They aim for a new type of expression which is made possible by this combination.

Actually, Antenna is composed of three artists who are active in each particular domain, Hideyuki Tanaka, Keisuke Ichimura and Kikumi Furukawa.

Antenna has expressed its own worldview, "Yamatopia," through diverse approaches in many regions and countries. "Yamatopia" is a world which consists of selected elements from contemporary Japanese society, a society which is becoming systematic and superficial. The mascot character of "Yamatopia" is Jappy.

In 2006, in a previous exhibition at TSCA Kashiwa, Antenna developed the fiction world of Yamatopia with the "Advent of Jappy". In this exhibition, Antenna tried to emphasize the double-sided reality of the surface and diverse aspects, light and shadow of present day Japanese society. From 2007 through 2008, Antenna has exhibited "Gendai Osatsu Toshi Mandala (Mandala made of the paper currency of the contemporary city)" or "Gendai Osatsu Toshi-zu (Image of paper currency of the contemporary city)."

For this exhibition, a new large scale installation called "Tengai" will be exhibited hanging from the ceiling of the gallery, expressing the "reverse" of this world. This reverse world is not only a shadow or inverse image and negative impression, but also denotes the lives or customs of people who live in this world - values that come into view when we try to gain deeper knowledge about superficial contemporary society.

"Tokoyo" in the title of this exhibition, "Tokoyo no Shiro-Utushi" means constant eternity. "Shiro-Utsushi" consists of two words, "Shiro" and "Utsushi". "Shiro" is taken from "Yorishiro," which refers to an object in which the spirit of the gods dwell when they manifest themselves in the world. "Utushi "reflects "Shiro" as mirror. And "Shiro-Utsushi" is also used as the name of a ceremony of movement in the video work "Advent of Jappy".

"Tokoyo" and "Shiro-Utsushi". In this exhibition, Antenna proposes a point of view for the world which expands from the sound of two words that hold diverse meanings. Antenna poses the question of whether there exists a human truth in the connections and existence of contrastive elements connecting surface to its inverse instantiation, material and immaterial, instantaneity and eternity.
