Koji Omaru "Tokyo Tower"

Nikon Salon Bis
Finished

Artists

Koji Omaru
While working near Tokyo Tower, Omaru often saw only its apex appear between buildings and part of it reflected in adjacent building windows. Boasting a height that exceeds 300 meters, this red-and-white electrical tower is easily recognizable as Tokyo Tower even through fragmented glimpses and reflections. The whole of Japan was full of hope for the future when the tower was built, and it has stood as a symbol of both Tokyo and Japan for half a century. These facts, too, contribute to the significance of the tower.

Omaru once imagined that the fragments of the tower brought about chemical reactions with his own experiences and memories. He felt as if the fragmented images of the tower had been assembled into a whole for a brief instant. How far does the power of his imagination compel him to keep constructing the image of Tokyo Tower in his head? How much further does he have to break up the image of the tower so that he can be freed from it? It might be that images of things only exist in our heads, and are naturally incomplete and unstable.
