"Memento Vivere/ Memento Phantasma" Exhibition

French Embassy
Finished
Entitled "Memento Vivere/ Memento Phantasma" (living memory/ phantasmal memory), a total of 37 emerging artists from Tokyo University of the Arts' "Geidai-kei" Project will exhibit their work, hold symposia and perform live shows.

These students, graduates and professional artists from Geidai were selected at the joint screening conducted by the university and the French Embassy. Around a century ago, the modern poet Sakutaro Hagiwara longed to go to France. This sense of distance is symbolized by the embassy building, which will soon be demolished. Each participating artist will decipher and examine the effect of time that led to its demolition.

In addition, a "documentary art experiment" will take place onsite for the duration of the exhibition, in an attempt to document the changes in time and space that surround creators and their audience. The history of distance and proximity between France and Japan is stepping forward into a new phase called the future.

(I dedicate this project to co-curator and professor Yoshiaki Watanabe.)
