Alicia Bay Laurel
Alicia Bay Laurel was born to an orthopedic surgeon father and a sculptor mother in 1949. Influenced by her mother, Alicia yearned for a bohemian lifestyle, and left on a hitchhiking tour after graduating from high school. Eventually, she ended up at Wheeler Ranch, a hippie commune in Sonoma County, California.

At the time, the ranch was home to around 100 people who grew crops and raised horses and cows, living in the middle of a forest without either electricity or running water. Initially befuddled, Alicia learnt how to live in this new way and find her niche in the community. She later wrote and illustrated a guidebook about how to live with primitive survival skills entitled "Living on the Earth" (1970). It included information on how to gather drinking water in the wild, store food, make soap, use herbs and wild plants, give birth at home, and much more. Alicia has since gone on to be an artist and musician as well, and her work has recently been reevaluated in light of the eco movement.

In addition to her original illustrations, this exhibition features new, previously unexhibited drawings on the theme of the death of those dearest to us (Alicia lost both her parents on the same day last year). She will also be giving workshops, talks and concerts during her stay in Japan.
