Jason Orton
Margaret Howell is hosting an exhibition and sale of work by documentary photographer Jason Orton at the Margaret Howell Tokyo flagship on Park Avenue Jinnan from August 13th through 30th. The exhibition documents a journey taken by Orton and the writer Ken Worpole in early 2005 along the entire Essex coastline and celebrates this diverse and remarkable coastal landscape.

Orton's photography study is complemented by Ken Worpole's essay telling the story of the journey over 350 miles of coastline, taking in the atmosphere, the landscape, and its relationship to the sea. Worpole's essay provides a personal insight uncovering historical and cultural references that influence the present landscape and reveal its past. The book conveys a heightened sense of curiosity and a strong sense of attachment to this unique and uncompromising coastline.

Recognizing the distinctiveness of any landscape is an essential starting point when considering its future. Orton's photography has successfully challenged conventional notions of beauty by visually documenting an environment that refuses to conform to such notions.

Commenting on the exhibition Margaret Howell says...

"I often wonder why I'm attracted by flat, desolate, out of the way places more than the conventional picturesque scenery found in Britain. I think the answer is to be found in a small book titled "350 Miles - An Essex Journey". Jason Orton, the photographer, sent me a copy with the 'hunch' that I would find it interesting. His intuition was right. Sensitively written by Ken Worpole and perceptively photographed by Orton, the words and pictures together evoke an atmosphere of place so eccentrically English and, to my eye, a landscape of intriguing beauty. So many people have enjoyed the book, I thought it would be fitting to show the original photographs in the light and space of our shop on Wigmore Street for others to discover."

Limited-edition signed prints of each photograph will be available to order at the exhibition. Price on application.
