ZOU-NO-HANA Terrace is pleased to announce “flyingCity - Bio-Mechanism Terminal”, the first solo exhibition in Japan by leading Korean creative design studio flyingCity. Formed in Seoul in 2001, flyingCity is a thriving artists' collective of specialist creators from contemporary art and architecture. For this exhibition, flyingCity created a story of ‘the Other’ (presences which are not yourself). Today Yokohama is known for its tourism, and such meetings have become commonplace, blurring the boundary between ‘the Other’ and ourselves. For this narrative, flyingCity revisited the subject of who these strangers might be, and what the word ‘the Other’ might mean or symbolize, in migration and travel.
flyingCity proposed the ZOU-NO-HANA Terrace, architecturally open to the outside, and in the middle of a touristic area, as a terminal for travelers coming and going, a place where such encounters with ‘the Other’ might continue into the future. The Bio-Mechanism Terminal installation uses huge and irregular illumination objects. The work was derived using a common flyingCity method: the children's workshop. The theme provided by the children was “Fantistic Journeys”. The children drew things strange to them, things they'd never seen, imagining elements from inside of their bodies, or mines or the chemical world. flyingCity extracted various elements from these drawings, and blended and mutated them to produce the Bio-Mechanism installation. These Bio-Mechanisms are suspended eerily in the terrace, now become a transportation terminal, recalling futuristic vehicles, spaceships, like those we see in Japanese animation, while at the same time functioning as powerful suggestions of the existence of ‘the Other’ among us. It Is thus both a device to present and a catalyst to question our relationships with ‘the Other’ through travel.
