Shoji Hamada
Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) was one of the founding members of the Japanese Mingei (folk art and craft) movement, as well as a prominent contemporary ceramic artist. Previous exhibitions of his work, however, have generally neglected to examine his standing as a leading Modernist of his time.

Through his association with the English potter Bernard Leach, Hamada's sojourn and residence in the English town of St. Ives is well known. However, he also spent much time in the quiet, idyllic town of Ditchling, East Sussex, where his experiences inspired him to shift his base to Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. Upon his return to Japan, Hamada devoted himself to the pursuit of a "healthy, vigorous beauty" based on the virtues and comforts of nature, making him an early proponent of the "Slow Life" movement.

This exhibition introduces viewers to Hamada's Modernist leanings in an attempt to reevaulate the relationship between craft and life.
