William Eugene Smith

William Eugene Smith (December 30, 1918 - October 15, 1978) is known as one of the world's most prominent photojournalists. He produced several various photo essays for Life magazine including the widely acclaimed "Country Doctor"(1948), "Nurse Midwife"(1951), "Spanish Village" (1950) and "Man of Mercy" (1954) - a photo essay on Dr. Albert Schweitzer and his humanitarian work in equatorial Africa. He raised photography to an art form and established a reputation as a giant in the history of photojournalism. Smith's broad body of works incorporate photo images taken on the battlefields of WWII, the devotion of a country doctor tending to rural communities, and a photo essay on Dr. Albert Schweitzer and his humanitarian work in equatorial Africa. However, in all his photos he sought to incorporate a spirit of humanism and portray the deep interest and love he had for people.

W. Eugene Smith was also fiercely uncompromising in the quality of prints of his photographic works, and worked tirelessly in his darkroom to strike the perfect balance in his black and white depictions. This exhibition features approximately 20 valuable original prints including such renowned works as "The Walk To Paradise Garden" (1946), "Nurse Midwife" and "Man of Mercy" (his photo essay on the work of Albert Schweitzer).
