Women's Power of Edo -Fashion, Makeup, Lessons

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished
Women of today play highly active roles in society, while “Joshiryoku” (women’s power) has become a common phrase to describe women who try to improve their charm through fashion and learning. This exhibition introduces the same pursuit of women during the Edo period, as reflected in ukiyo-e wood-block prints, where women are depicted trying on popular clothing and make-up, as well as enjoying the lessons on the tea ceremony or flower arranging. From fashionable kimono, to publications on hairdressing, to literature, music and calligraphy the women of Edo sought to improve not only their appearances but also their inner beauty and inner richness. This exhibition aims to open eyes towards the sophisticated sense of beauty seen in the depiction of the women of Edo in the ukiyo-e wood-block prints.
