Daisuke Nishijima
Daisuke Nishijima made his debut as a manga artist in 2004 with "Boko Mura Senso", but his creative engagements do not stop there, being active also as an illustrator, graphic designer, artistic director and even creating music as "DJ Mahoutsukai". The work presented under the title "A World in which Everything is Quiet" is a reflection upon the state of Fukushima and Tokyo since 3.11, the artist himself having moved from Tokyo to Hiroshima due to the disaster. Here in this narrative the "tree of light", which accepts the inhabitants of the "dark village" governed by shadows and silence, depicts our own displaced reality and future. Although having completed one volume of these works Nishijima comments that he has hit upon a world which he hopes to continuously develop through his drawing from now on. All of Nishijima's work is hand drawn, rejecting digitization due to doubts of the value of work created on the basis of mass production, showing a particular fondness for the texture which is always lost in reprinting. The sense of this is particularly strong in this exhibition which offers up darkness, light, silence, forest, aura, spirits, villagers and the tree of light in a world where everything is quiet.
Throughout the exhibition period very Saturday DJ Mahoutsukai will be resident at Ai Koko Gallery, inviting various special guests for live music performances. Furthermore the first 100 visitors will receive a special limited edition present.
