Keiji Usami
Keiji Usami drew his intitial inspiration from an image of an uprising of African Americans in Watts, Los Angeles which appeared in Time magazine in 1965. From this image he took 4 figures running, crouching, rolling and hurling a stone, and for the next 25 years continued to produce work solely upon these elements. At this point Takahashi Tsujii has commented that the discipline and restraint of such an act was quite outstanding, as if a man with a repertoire of numerous melodies had prohibited himself from singing. But despite this Usami continued unswervingly in his work for a further 20 years until he passed away in October last year. He once commented “I didn’t choose this way because I like painting. I liked to paint but that is somewhat irrelevant. I have consciously chosen my own way of life”. These calm words are the song of Usami, and the pictures he created were the devices through which he consciously, self-restrainedly pursued that song.
