This exhibition introduces over 100 examples of naïve painting and outsider art from the collection of the Setagaya Art Museum, made by artists from around the world. Four works by Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) are a special feature of the collection, which also includes works by other modern and contemporary artists such as Joan Miró, Max Ernst, and Yayoi Kusama that have ties to outsider art. Outsider artists are artists who have not received technical or academic training and are not well known in the world of art, often including artists with mental disorders or disabilities. By reexamining the lives and work of these artists, this exhibition aims to explore the meaning of creating and living with art.
