Artists

Keitoku Toizumi
The subject of this series is the Zero Fighter planes of WWII. The paintings were inspired by the obsession of many with printing anime characters on the tanks, helicopters, and other Self-Defense Force vehicles. The artist believes that these machines are shrouded in an innocent way of thinking and a rose-colored perspective that evokes a kind of emptiness. Once considered to be the most advanced fighter plane in the world, the Zero Fighter was ultimately used by Japan’s suicide squads, becoming a symbol of transience and fragility. These images of emptiness, death, and the ephemeral are allegorical of vanitas paintings. The artist’s aim is to express the nihilism of the current age found in its naïve view of the Zero planes, which were once the instruments of war most strongly associated with death.
