Noriko Hayashi “Unholy Matrimony in Kyrgyzstan”

Nikon Salon Bis

Noriko Hayashi
In the small central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan, approximately 40% of married women were kidnapped and forced to wed by men. Called “Ala Kachuu” (carrying off), in 85% of cases this practice results in the women being married to their captors after hours and days of resistance. Many women give in because they are deemed “unclean” after entering a man’s house and returning to their own homes would bring shame up on their families. Forced marriage by kidnapping was made illegal in 1994, but still remains rife. While there are many women who have settled and made the best of such a life, there are also many who have pursued divorce and even suicide. Between July and November, 2012, Noriko Hayashi spent four months in the villages of Kyrgyzstan documenting women in their teens through their 80s who had been forced to marry through kidnapping. These 30 Miki Jun Award-winning color photographs tell their stories.
