Artists

Lillian Bassman
Bringing with her a new sense of freedom to the field, Lilian Bassman was an iconic fashion photographer of the post war era. Having been trained as an artist and art director she created images of originality and surprise. Beginning her career in 1948 as a photographer for Harper’s Bazaar, Lilian Bassman made a significant contribution to the aesthetic sense of the age and continued for the next 20 years to capture the inner strength of numerous of female models. In 1970 she distanced herself from fashion photography in the pursuit of a more personal form of expression, but in 1996 at the age of 79 she returned to the fashion world with a splash. This exhibition presents a select collection of her photography for the first time in Japan, reflecting her passion and love for her work.
