Artists

Sanae Awatsuji
Sanae Awatsuji started out as a textile designer in the 1950s, marrying fellow textile designer Hiroshi Awatsuji in 1958. The couple established a shared office, and in the mid-sixties brought their “Daki Ningyou” (Baby Doll) collection into the world. Beginning with her husband, Awatsuji attracted passionate and assured fellow artists who broke through the rigidity of the age.

In a time full of uncertainty about the collapse of the natural world and the human spirit, Gallery Le Bain is providing the opportunity to revisit or view for the first time Awatsuji’s “Fatties” series, a well-preserved collection of dolls like vibrant rays of sunshine. More than 250 breathtaking dolls made from the 1970s through recent times are on display. Some works will be available for purchase.
